Landing in a new country with no mobile data makes everything harder: the map, the transport, the boarding pass. There are two sensible ways to solve it, and the choice depends mostly on where you are going.

Travelling within the European Union? Buy nothing

EU regulation abolished roaming surcharges inside its borders. Your normal plan works across EU countries for data, calls and texts, with nothing to activate and no add-on to buy. Purchasing an eSIM just to move around Europe is usually money wasted.

It is worth checking your plan's small print: some carriers cap the data volume you can use while roaming, even without charging for it.

Heading outside the EU? An eSIM almost always wins

Beyond that zone, your carrier's roaming is typically billed per day. Rates of 10 to 15 dollars a day turn a fortnight's trip into more than 150 dollars. A travel eSIM for the same destination generally costs 15 to 30 dollars in total.

What an eSIM actually is

It is a digital SIM built into the phone itself. You buy the plan before leaving, install it in a few minutes and switch it on when you land. Because phones hold several profiles at once, you keep your usual number for calls and messages while data runs over the local eSIM.

Beyond the lower cost, an eSIM connects directly to the country's local networks, which usually means better coverage than a roaming agreement tied to a single operator.

Check two things before buying

Check what the plan covers, too: some eSIMs are data-only, with no phone number attached. That is fine for maps and internet messaging, but it will not receive verification texts sent to your usual line.

One practical tip

Install the eSIM before you leave home, on wi-fi and without rushing, and set it to start on your arrival date. Configuring it at the destination airport, offline and with luggage in hand, is needlessly awkward.
